Inn-Fighting

I’ve been out of the loop for a while so I completely missed the release of this game from Wizards of the Coast. It’s billed on the WotC site as “A D&D Supplement” which is completely bizarre as it has nothing to do with “supplementing” D&D. It’s a GAME and a perfectly fun one at that.

Designed by Rob Heinsoo (who apparently wrote up some designer’s notes that only D&D Insider subscribers are allowed to read, so I can’t comment on those) the game just a tad fiddly to get started but after a couple of times around the table I “got it” just fine and even Kate was able to sit down at the table and play with us (and win!).

I’d write more about it but I’d be going from memory since our friend took his copy home with him last night and I wouldn’t want to get anything horribly wrong in the remembering. Mat Smith’s August edition of Previews has a bit on the game (scroll down to “October” to find it) and MerrickB does a little write-up over at Board Game Geek, so I’ll just say that it was fun and I’d play it again.

The Insider is free for the next few months, if you really want to go look at ‘em. :-)

  • If I really want to, I can walk over to Rob’s house and talk to him in person. ;) No D&D Insider for me, thanks.

  • Fair enough. ;-)

Just mentioning it, since it’s not the first time the question’s come up on my flist today. :-)

  • Shaken, not stirred

I just reviewed Inn Fighting for ICv2′s Guide to Games and for Scrye. You’re right, it is fun; not exactly my cup of tea, but a decent design. I envy you your direct feed to so many talented designers. :-)

We envy your proximity to John and Judith, if that helps at all. :)

We were laughing because every single action card I drew all night (and I drew a lot) was a Bystander. And I failed every defense roll… every single one. And still had fun.

  • Yeah, it’s probably good to note that there’s a free trial of DDI for people who are interested. I appreciate the assist.

  • Inn Fighting makes a good “kill some time” game. We’ve been using it as something to do while we wait on the whole posse to show up on board game days, so we don’t start something really involved before someone shows up. I suspect it can also easily be turned into a drinking game, but, well, I doubt that’d be good to try with Kate playing. ;)

  • Because Kate would win? :P

  • We played it, and gave it mixed reviews. Hubby and one of our friends liked it a lot, me and another friend were so-so on it. Still, I would play it again. Both hubby and me prefer the card game Three Dragon Ante to Inn Fighting, however. :)
