The Great Reorg of 2009

Pantry
Originally uploaded by Nikchick.

Chris has been posting a little about his ongoing office reorganization. After installing an attic ladder this fall, I’ve moved on to sorting things in our drawers and closets so that everything in the house has a home. It’s impossible to put things away when you don’t have anywhere to put them and that was the situation in our house as 2008 drew to a close. Instead of watching tv, playing computer games, reading, blogging, or otherwise screwing around in the evenings I’ve been spending my nights and weekends going through our house from top to bottom.

We gave two full sets of old luggage, several boxes of old clothes and bedding and other household items to charity last week and moved several plastic bins of rarely used items up to the attic. I expect this project will keep me busy for a good long time yet but I’m motivated to keep at it because I find gazing in on my orderly cupboards, tidy laundry room, and functional closets is immensely satisfying. I look forward to getting the larger spaces similarly organized.

  • impressive!

I’ve got a to-do list of things to get rid of, and messes to purge, but it has been slow going on it.

  • Rah! For you are mighty and have slain (at least some of) the wild clutter!

  • Looks great! It is kind of funny how much satisfaction having things finally be orderly makes.

I did our closets and most of our cupboards last year only because of relatives staying here. Not sure I would have had the willpower like you did to do this just for myself. G

arage still needs to be finished, but that will have to wait until the weather warms up. And some used books STILL need to be sold. (They’re boxed in the garage.)

For me, the only really annoying thing was how much it cost to buy “storage solutions” that worked for what we had left after throwing/giving stuff away.

  • You have no idea how jealous I am. ;)

  • Oh, how I hope to have such orderly cupboards one day…

  • Excellent! And a goad to me to get with it here. :)

  • I did some of this in a section of our basement over the holiday break – a section of boxes and random crap that had been piling up since we moved in 8 years ago – and I was totally amazed at the difference. I was so happy with it that I went down the next morning to admire my handiwork and discovered that the humidifier was leaking out. Fortunately, that part was easily fixed and I could go back to admiring my cleanup, which then inspired me to clean more of the basement. Just 700 square feet more to go…

  • I love the stadium seating for the spices in the cupboard picture — did you have to buy a little rack for that, or are they sitting on pieces of spare lumber, or what? I have to devote precious brain cells to remembering where any given spice is.

I’m totally on your side about “joy-through-shelving.” I managed to convince that we needed an Omar rack for the kitchen so that I could finally get the pantry organized. That was in September, and I still sometimes sneak downstairs in the night just to look at all my nicely serried ranks of boxes and cans and bottles and things.

    • I bought a plastic tier for the spices and also one for the canned goods. They’ve made things SO much easier. I’ve also been known to fashion makeshift tiers out of spare cardboard since we always have a lot of boxes around the house. I did that for the tea cupboard (not pictured).

  • Oh my. Your pantry makes my cupboards feel ashamed of themselves.

I’m reminded of that great scene in “Accidental Tourist” – you know the one! Actually I find arranging canned goods by expiration date rather than in an alphabetical format works much better. It allows one more time to spend sorting socks!
